Subliminal Persuasion
Subliminal persuasion is used frequently in advertising banner or some graphic design. It is most used in advertising design. According to many studies, human can perceive information unconciously. The brain analyticizes the information but the mind does no interpret the information for meaning. It just perceives the image or information at the subliminal level.
If you perceive something conciuosly then it is not subliminal or at least not subliminal anymore. Subliminal can occur through many sense:
1. Smell : smell can be used to indicate sth that is delicious. This can be used in bakery. It will appeal the users of some delicious cake.
2.Sight: connotation meaning in image. They can be up side down or distorted or resize smaller so we miss it. This make the image much more meaningful
3.Sound : sound can be placed at level that is higher or lower than the range of conciuos human hearing
4. Touch and taste : the surfaces that we touch can convey information subliminally
The connotation in image are used mostly in advertising design to attract the intention of users.
Following are some image that I found very interesting using subliminal persuasion
This is the advertisement of Guess shoes. This image have connotation meaning that with Guess shoes things become alive. One shoes is put above the other indicate that sexually available.

This is the advertisement of Smirrnoff wine. The lemon slices are put together to form "007" which is the ID of James Bond in the famous film series " 007 spy". This imply that drinking Smirrnoff wine can strengthen you.

Some thoughts about Saigon Open City
We were required to come to Saigon Open City exhibition. First of all, I found that the place was too hard to find. Actually, I didn't know about the Rich's email showing me the way to SOC so when I come to the place where the exhibition is held, I couldn't find SOC. All I could see are " Chao ca"banner or " Quan doi nhan dan"banner . In the class after that day, my friends told me that SOC have some problem with licensing in Vietnam. However, I think that they can fix it as best as possible such as they can put some banners or signs to indicate the place. This will make the place easier to find and hence, can inform to everyone who are interested in art.
Actually, I did come to the place but I couldn't find the SOC. I were required to put some articals of SOC so I find the website of SOC and here are my opinion when I saw this website :
Saigon Open City is a series of exhibitions as events that will combine the ideas of contemporary art and the rich culture of Asia cities.The Saigon Open City exhibition is held every year which is concentrate on contemporary art in everyday life. The Saigon Open City exhibitions is a long term art and cultural project consisting of exhibitions and special events that will happen in two years from 2006 to 2007. SOC thematically based on 3 different chapters : liberation, unification and reconstruction
Following is the art work in the first part of SOC:The first chapter , Liberation, will dealt with everyday life during the liberation period in Vietnam
"Change" of Le Thanh Nam Tran
The meals are transform to sth electrical. This quite impress me because it strongly shows the image of Saigon City - a city that is developing very fast. This reminds me to IT and electric fields which are the main field in Saigon and in Vietnam.

" Red map" of Phan Le Chung

"Black net " of Nguyen Dao An Ha
These two art works make me think of the traffic in Vietnam. It is messy and complex just like the roads. The main color in these two art work are red and black which are the strong color . It subconciuosly indicate sth dangerous, mysteriuos.

"World of barcode" of Nguyen Thi Bao Ngoc
This remind me to the copyrighted of products such as software, books,... The red chair which is put in the center of the room, covered by the barcode just like we, human who is sitting in this chair and are claimed of plagiarsm or... The red color of the chair claims that we have to find the solution for this situation cause we are going to join the WTO so we have to ban the unlawed book copyrighted.

Advertising design
There are many advertisement that don't provide products's information exactly to the users. In order to sell more products and have high profit, advertising design focus on attracting the users to buy as many products as possible. Most of Advertising designs exaggerate or give false product's information. Advertising design aims to persuade people to buy things they don't need, with money they don't have, in order to impress others who don't care.
As you know, smoking is very harmful. However, the advertisements of cigarettes such as Marlboro are also make the viewers believe that smoking will make the man much more manly.They don't care the user's health, they just care their budget. They don't show the image of patients who are suffered lung cancer because of smoking cigarettes. They fake the users using the manly cowboys image


These are photos I took when I was wandering in the street to take photos for the 3rd DIM assignment ( we have to take our own photos to make a book cover). This time I concentrate on advertising banners because our assignment is about the advertising in society.


This is the image you can see at every where in HCM city. This is the advertisement of cigarettes. You can see that the smoke is modified to make sense to the viewers. The quote " Discover a taste of Intrique" along with the modified smoke make the viewers think of smoking is very appealing not harmful. And the quote" Hút thuốc lá co hại cho sức khỏe" ( Smoking is harmful) is smaller, not attractive.
